Designkiosk Ruhr.2010


Together with the Bochumer design award Bochum is an important driving force for the arts & crafts branche for 12 years now. Due to the brilliant award winners of the whole federal territory the price is deemed to be the first address of the creative economy. With the exhibition and dialogue project DESIGNKIOSK RUHR.2010 the Bochum Design e.V. together with Bochum and the Kreis Recklinghausen participate in the Capital of Culture 2010. In 2010 arts & crafts designer of the metropole Ruhr, germany and Europe will be invited for the Bochumer design award to participate in an extraordinary design presentation and an European exchange process of the creative economy. The selection of about 30 of the best art & crafts designer will be nominated by an international jury for the DESIGNKIOSK RUHR.2010.

Our network with european trade associations, institutions, members of the creative industrie and interested citizens of the ruhr metropolis is important for the success of the project "DESIGNKIOSK RUHR.2010". We are currently in exchange with following institutions and cities:

BochumDesign e.V., an initiative of Bochumer contractors, institutional and civic actors, offers an Arts & Crafts Award for the sector since 1997: the Bochumer Design Award. He marks as a work award the art and development of a basic commodity. The award is considered as an important creative economical driving force for the sector in the Ruhr area for years and has achieved a large importance on the basis of the award winners in the whole federal territory and the professional manning of the jury. More than 1000 professional persons for Arts & Crafts of all divisions have given a survey of current trends und new developments for basic design in Bochum, so far. >>>

The Bochum Design e.V. as an official project of the Capital of Culture 2010 will document the economical and cultural importance of the Arts & Crafts industry of the Ruhr area by the dialog and exhibition project DESIGNKIOSK RUHR.2010, as well as to come into a creative economical dialog with the actors and to point out the current tendencies of the personalized “design presence”.

During the 12 years of his existence the jury has priced 37 objects of the field basic design. We introduce each first awards:


		On the basis of the Bochumer design award an exhibition project will be curated. Designer of all cities of the Ruhr area (and their European twin towns), Germany, as well as the EU states are going to be nominated. According to the verbalized criteria in the statute of the Bochumer design award a nomination committee and an independent jury decide on the selection and attendance at the exhibition DESIGNKIOSK RUHR.2010. About 30 participants will be selected. The jury consists of prominent, interdisciplinary working personalities of national and international institutions of Design and companies. The appellation of the jury members will be closed to the beginning of 2009. The bidding documents for the attendance will be released in the beginning of 2009.


	The best European Arts&Crafts designer of the fields furniture design, living accessories, fashion design, fashion accessories und adornment present themselves at outstanding locations and give an overview of the newest tendencies of the Arts&Crafts sector. Each of the participating designers is going to gain a selected Ruhr area kiosk for a place of presentation. The kiosks will be converted in DESIGNKIOSKS through creative changes without losing their initial style and disposal function. The participating designers will be announced in the end of 2009. 	The intention of this project is to leave the reverend path of the design presentation and to forage for other unconsumed places. As public locations of the distribution of goods and of communication, kiosks and huts in the Ruhr area fulfil this in a typical way. Kiosk is a myth of everyday culture and an important supply centre for inhabitants in many districts. Against the background of this fact, it is able to be staged as a potential location to shelter Arts & Crafts Design. It is a sociocultural location of encounter. It is visited by each class of population; everything comes together. The exhibition project DESIGNKIOSK RUHR.2010 connects the elements of design and everyday culture to a temporary design-presentation and mediates a different and relaxed view on design-products.


The DESIGN KIOSKS are able to be experienced on a special route across the metropolis Ruhr. On a journey through the mythological Ruhr area you can enjoy design but also get to know to everyday culture of the inhabitants of the districts. About 30 DESIGN KIOSKS will be combined to an entire exhibition. Bochum as the city of project will be the central lynchpin of the route. The route will be publically introduced in 2009.

The whole program for DESIGNKIOSK RUHR.2010 will be introduced to the publicity in the end of 2009. Among numerous local and district oriented events two superior program elements will be realized around the exhibition DESIGNKIOSK RUHR.2010.
A multifunctional and mobile DESIGNKIOSK will be equipped with an audio-visual technology and will appear in the form of a “Road show” in important official occasions in 2009 as a project ambassador and tour along the DESIGNKIOSK ROUTE of the Ruhr area cities. In a cooperative project with the TU-Dortmund and the Chamber of Trade Dortmund the mobile kiosk will be developed and realized.

The whole program for DESIGNKIOSK RUHR.2010 will be introduced to the publicity in the end of 2009. Among numerous local and district oriented events two superior program elements will be realized around the exhibition DESIGNKIOSK RUHR.2010.

The BochumDesign e.V. presents all previous award winner and participants at the Bochumer Designpreis in a great retrospective. With this accompanying exhibition the lasting importance and reputation of the design location will be once again documented.

The Jahrhunderthalle Bochum is planned to be the venue.


			Among the presentation European Arts & Crafts designer the creative economical dialog is part of the project DESIGNKIOSK RUHR.2010. The aim for a project orientated exchange process between private and public culture economical institutions is to illustrate and advance the economic sector Arts&Crafts as an independent sector and to reveal his network within the creative industry in the begin of 2008. In a “Best-Practice” dialog between regional, national and European Arts & Crafts actors and institutions, strategies for constitutive processes of the Arts & Crafts sector should be developed, which can be exemplary for other creative economical sectors, too.


More and more consumers turn their attention to the “hand-made” Arts & Crafts products in search of more quality and more individuality and so procure increasing rates of growth for the sector. For the last years a continuous and disproportionate increasing number of Arts & Crafts producers are noticeable for the Ruhr area. The spectrum varies from operations side working freelancers, young startup companies, self-employed artists, small companies for handcraft to big trade enterprises.		The actors are to be identified for politics, economy and consumer but are not to be identified as a separate sector. Solitaire development processes have been bunched to a necessary corporate strategical sector development, so far. By a dialog process the impulse of the DESIGNKIOSK RUHR.2010 should give way to an advanced sector development beyond the year 2010. The aim is the establishment of a development agency for the Arts & Crafts sector with the location in Bochum through the association Bochum Design e.V..


The project DESIGN KIOSK Ruhr 2010 counts on participation and cooperation to have a lasting effect. A multitude of companies, institutions, trade associations and universities are supporting the DESIGN KIOSK.

The association BochumDesign e.V. emerged from a common initiative of Bochumer traders, the chambers, urban and political agents and civic involvement. The function of the association is the advancement of art and culture through design-related arts and culture activities in Bochum. So it was possible for the nonprofit association to buy a bulk of the objects, which are priced by the Bochumer design award and to consolidate them to a collection of contemporary basic design.		The collection is in this respect unusual, as it is not museal exposed by the association, but provided for “the use” to the public domain and interested citizens. The chairman of the association is the designer Matthias Reckert, one of the authors of the DESIGNKIOSK RUHR.2010.


Ruhr 2010 integrates as the first Capital of Culture of Europe the “creative economy” as a subject and field of action in its program. More and more people are detecting their creative abilities and turn from consumers to producers and give the impulse for exciting economical innovations. These worldwide far-reaching changes offer an enormous chance, which has to be used by the metropole Ruhr, if it wants to be an important part in the worldwide reign of the creative centre.		To strengthen the regional creative and economic power permanent, to visualize national and to concentrate synegetically the activities of the acting 20.000 companies in the sector of the Metropole Ruhr is an ambitious duty, which the project DESIGN KIOSK Ruhr 2010 participates.
